How to Prepare for Your Portrait Session | Choosing a Location

Welcome to the new ‘How to Prepare for Your Portrait Session’ blog series! We are getting started with our first post dedicated to photo location ideas that will help you in deciding the perfect setting for your session!

One of the first questions I get asked after a client books me for their session is, “Where do you suggest we take pictures?”.  And I love helping them find a photo location that fits who they are and truly makes their session a wonderful experience.

Our Philly area has so many fun locations and it can be difficult in finding what fits your personality and style. Will you prefer an urban, rustic, natural or classic studio setting? If you have a hard time choosing a location for your portraits then today’s tips are for you!

There are a few things that you want to consider when deciding on where to have your photos taken. Let’s talk about them!

1. What’s your favorite place to hang out?

For a relaxed and fun session, choose a location that fits your personality and style. Think of somewhere personal or one that is meaningful for you. Your photos will mean so much more to you and truly tell a better story. If you have your photos taken in a place that you enjoy with your family or reflects what you do in your business, then you will feel right at home and your photos will reflect your genuine happiness and mood. You want photos that capture you being you!

2. Where will you be displaying your photos?

Consider where you will display your new images. If you plan on putting your images on the walls of your home, on your website, or in your marketing materials, then you’ll want to think about your colors and the locations that will look best in the area where your photographs will be displayed or used. Think of the colors of your home or brand.

3. What will you be wearing for your portrait session?

Your outfits and the location of your session need to compliment each other. When your coordinate your outfit with your location, the results are beautiful and cohesive images. If your shoot involves being active or playful outdoors, let your clothes speak to that and choose a location with an easy, cool vibe. If you love romance and rustic details, choose something flowy and light to be photographed in an open field or woodsy area. If you you are a food blogger, choose a a light and airy kitchen or airbnb with stunning modern details. If you love to wear rich colors/jewel tones/gold sequin dresses that catch the sunlight, consider choosing an outdoor location that has a vast array of fall leaves changing in to the gorgeous colors of nature.
